Wild Bill Hickok

"Wild Bill" Hickok
Born May 27, 1837-Died August 2, 1876
Born in Homer, Illinois, Hickok served law enforcement as a Constable, Sheriff, City Marshall,and U.S. Deputy Marshall during his career.
He also worked as a stagecoach driver, and Army Scout
Hickok died on August 2, 1876 while playing poker at Nutt & Mann's Saloon #10 in Deadwood, Dakota Territory He was shot in the back of the head by John McCall, and died instantly. McCall was eventually hanged for the murder.
At his death, Hickok was holding a pair of eights and a pair of aces-all black, which has popularly been known as "Dead Man's Hand"
Hickok was one of the very first "fast-draw" artists and carried 2 silver Colt Navy .36 cal. revolvers

Chief Joseph and Family Portrait--1880-- Framed Collectible

Chief Joseph-(March 3, 1840 to September 21, 1904), was Chief of the Wallowa band of Nez Perce.
Born in the Wallowa Valley of Oregon, a peace-loving Native American, Josephs patience was tried several times due to the U.S. Army's reneging on several Treaties, taking land from the Nez Perce.
Joseph and the Nez Perce headed for Canada, and were about 40 miles from the border, when they surrendered to Army troops. General William Tecumseh Sherman imprisioned them in a prisoner-of-war camp near Leavenworth, Kansas for 8 months. They were then banished to Indian Territory (Oklahoma) for about 10 years, where many died. Finally allowed to return to a reservation near Kooskia, Idaho.

African "Killer Bees" Tulsa (Warning Sign)

Yep, there it is...right in the middle of Tulsa... a sign perched within a utility power unit on the Tulsa State Fairgrounds.... "Killer Bees" in Tulsa? Seems a real warning...(it is a nicely printed metal sign)...so it must be serious! It seems the Tulsa area is a possible stop-over for the "little tyrants"...(but let's hope Tulsa is just a "fly-over").

Anyway, if anyone is interested, here is a little bit about these bad tempered flying insects:
Africanized Honey Bees (AHB), also called "Killer-Bees", are a breed of southern African bees that were exported to South America in 1956. Some of the bees escaped quarantine in 1957 and started working their way north. They were first detected in the U.S. in 1990 at Hidalgo, Texas.
They are termed "killer-bees" because they will swarm and attack animals and humans-without provocation- that stray into their territory- or near a hive. It is not necessary to actually disturb a hive for the bees to attack. They may respond viciously to noises, vibrations, or traffic sounds. Colonies may remain aggressive for 24 hours and can attack animals and humans within a quarter-mile from the hive.

The Golden Driller
.....he stands tall...76 feet high...43,500 pounds. First showed his prowess in 1953.... through the providence of Mid-Continent Supply Co. of Ft.Worth, Texas...for the International Petroleum Exposition at the Tulsa Sate Fairgrounds.
Then again in 1959, and at that time, his adoption papers were signed over to the Tulsa State Fair Authority. He got his permanent home--right there about 21st Street and Pittsburgh in 1966.
His diet consisted of angle-iron, plaster, fiberglass, concrete, and steel....all the great building-blocks for a growin'-boy! He wears a 576 inch belt, has a shoe size of 393DDD, and tops up with a size 112 hat!...(.not a good boy to pick a fight with)!
He can survive a 200 mile-per-hour wind, holdin' on to that old Oil Derrick from Seminole, OK.
Somehow, I just sleep better....knowing Tulsa's Big Boy is watching over things.

Tulsa Steam Locomotive

It sits right on the corner of 21st Street and Louisville...the old 58-ton steam train. Built in 1917, it was owned and used to ship lumber products for a company named Dierks Forests. It was donated to the City of Tulsa in 1963 by Dierks...set for awhile on the Tulsa Fairgrounds Midway area...moved in the 1970s to it present location. The "Old Lady" is pretty-much still intact, although now missing the "Dierks Forest" sign that she sported for many years. Lots and lots of valves, knobs and fittings, and has been repainted to prevent rust-out. Must have been a wonderful, loud, rockin'- ride in its time.
Tulsa is lucky to have her!

The Metro Diner -

Graced Tulsa for about 22 years at the location of 3001 E. 11th Street (Route 66).....
Elvis Presley was one of the celebrities that crossed its' busy threshold....but the hungry demon known as Progress devoured the Metro on November 26, 2006 in the name of the advancement of the University of Tulsa
The property had once claimed itself a Mobil Gas Station and later, an Arby's Restaurant...but it seems the gods had finally adopted a daughter and named her "Metro". Her death was unforeseeable, and, for the most-part, highly distasteful to the palate............. MrRon
